Kaolin of Kainuu exhibition, 2022

Kaolin of Kainuu exhibition featured ten Finland-based artists who share an interest in wild clay and experimental ceramic art. Each artist was given kaolin excavated from Puolanka to use in their own way in the exhibited works. The theme of the exhibition was the elements and minerals, that clay, planet and all living things are made of.

My exhibited works included also red clay from Taivalkoski, which, unlike typical Finnish red clay, can be fired to higher temperatures. Using this clay was, and still is, important to me, as my roots are firmly based in Taivalkoski.

Besides the exhibition, the Kaolin of Kainuu project included a three-day clay festival at Puolanka, during which the participants were able to visit the kaolin excavation site and take some kaolin with them. Both the exhibition and festival was curated and managed by Katariina Guthwert.
